Listening Skills
Alet de Jager
With all the technology at our finger tips, children get a lot of visual stimulation and they need to rely less and less on their listening skills.
Poor listening skills influence a child's ability to learn a language and sounds. Therefore it also influences their reading and spelling abilities.
The following activities will help develop your child's listening skills:
- Every evening, read a story to your child and ask questions about it. There should be no visual clues as with a DVD.
- Play 'Simon Says', where your child needs to listen for specific words before following the command.
- Tell 'chain stories'. One person begins telling a story. After a few sentences, the following person continues by adding a piece to the story, then the next person, and so it continues.
